AROUND THE COLLEGE

Here are some recent events in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.

  • Navistar, the manufacturer of International trucks has committed to increasing its partnership and support of the Automotive Technology program by donating numerous training components and 11 complete trucks to support student learning. One of the donated trucks is International’s premier line LoanStar model that is painted in Saluki maroon and white to celebrate the nationally recognized program. These donations, made possible by several alumni at Navistar, are valued at more than $1 million.
  • The annual “Give Kids A Smile Day,” offered by the School of Allied Health’s Dental Hygiene program, attracted about 160 children, in February. About 90 dental hygiene program students also participated.
  • Avona E. Greene, a junior in health care management from Champaign, received the Mid-America Health Care Executives Forum Award. The School of Allied Health’s Health Care Management program faculty nominated Greene based upon her academic performance, leadership acumen and volunteer community service.
  • Craig K. Anz, associate professor, School of Architecture, and José R. Ruiz, professor, aviation management and flight, are interim heads over their respective programs. Most recently, Anz, the interim director, was the college’s associate dean for academic affairs; Ruiz was on the faculty but has previously served as interim department chair.
  • Faith Y. Miller, associate professor and director of Dental Hygiene in the School of Allied Health, is one of the Judge William Holmes Cook Endowed Professorship recipients. The three-year appointments provide funds for scholarly work, and help increase and maintain diversity at the university.
  • Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA), a longtime and consistent supporter of the automotive program, recently donated three new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vehicles, five constant variable transmissions, and two engines. The donations, made possible by several of the company’s executive-level employees who are SIU automotive program alumni, are valued at more than $100,000.
  • Twenty-eight students in various programs within the College of Applied Arts and Sciences completed the SIU Externship program over spring break, March 14-18, and were later recognized for their achievements. The various fields included automotive technology, architectural studies and interior design, information systems technologies, aviation management and flight, health care management, mortuary science and funeral services and aviation technologies.
