Flying Salukis again earn ticket to nationals
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Flying Salukis utilized depth to turn in another dominating performance for the team’s sixth straight National Intercollegiate Flying Association Region VIII title Saturday, Oct. 29.

Varied paths lead student to SIU to pursue career as funeral director
Krawczyk, who is from Chicago, will graduate in May 2017 with a degree in mortuary science and funeral service. Deeply spiritual, Krawczyk prayed for guidance throughout her life. She was a financial planner in Chicago when she decided to change career paths. She moved to Carbondale in 2015, selecting SIU due to its academic requirements of a bachelor’s degree for the program.

3rd Annual MAI Aviation Technician Skills Competition
The Aviation Technologies Detail Dawgs competed in the 3rd Annual MAI Aviation Technician Skills competition in Ottumwa Iowa on Friday. SIU students took all three top spots coming in first, second, and third in the overall competition.

Third Annual ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium
The third annual ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium took place last Friday and Saturday in the Transportation Education Center. Over 20 parallel research presentations and 18 student posters about “Emerging Technologies” were presented with authors from SIUC and other regional institutions. Top student poster awards were given to three of SIUC's Architecture students: Jacob Petty, Zoey Koester, and Adam Tregoning.

Women in SIU automotive technology steer toward industry equality - Marnie Leonard
This disparity is something the university is actively working to fix through raising awareness of the issue and broadening recruitment efforts to include more women, said Jessica Suda, the first and only female instructor in the history of SIU’s automotive program. In the spring, Suda started a group called Women in Automotive Transportation Technology. This group, which is soon to become a registered student organization, involves men and women in raising awareness about different opportunities within the program.

Plane pull fundraiser for Special Olympics - Rachel Duenshing
Teams of eight people had to work together to try and pull a 737 aircraft - twelve feet. Fifteen teams from all over southern Illinois and the metro-east participated. This is the first time a plane pull has been held in our region, but organizers describe it as the perfect place for one.

You can now earn an SIU aviation degree in Pennsylvania - Katherine Schaeffer | Beaver County Times, Pa.
Through a new partnership between the Community College of Beaver County in Pennsylvania and SIU, the college’s aviation program graduates can earn a bachelor’s degree in aviation management without leaving the county.

Students Earn Cybersecurity Scholarship - Pete Rosenbery
Nine students are receiving $1,000 scholarships from the Southern Illinois Collegiate Cyber Co-op, which includes SIU’s School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies and seven regional community colleges. Tom Imboden, associate professor in the School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies, said the program creates an incentive for students to study cybersecurity and pursue that as a career field.

Pact creates career path for Aviation students - Pete Rosenbery
An agreement with a St. Louis-based regional airline will provide a career path for Southern Illinois University Carbondale aviation students interested in becoming professional pilots. The university will sign an agreement to participate in Trans States Airlines’ “Aviators Program.” The agreement will offer a career path for students after they graduate from SIU Carbondale.

Three generations of Smiths pursuing dreams at SIU - Christi Mathis
Three generations of the Smith family are simultaneously attending SIU; Marian Smith of Mounds, Arianne Smith of Carbondale and Cierra Smith of St. Louis. All three are full-time students, each with a different major and each taking a different path to complete her education. Cierra, 18 and a 2015 graduate of Mehlville High School in St. Louis, resides on campus where she is active in various organizations and activities as she pursues her degree in Radiologic Sciences.

Sturgis award presented to Davey, Thompson - Pete Rosenbery
SIU’s 2016 Lindell W. Sturgis Award recipients have a strong commitment to public and professional service. The SIU Board of Trustees presented the awards to Jon D. Davey and Jan Thompson. Davey, a professor in architectural studies and interior design, received the Sturgis Memorial Public Service Award.

Commencement ceremonies set for May 13-14 - Pete Rosenbery
The fourth “Forever SIU: A Commencement Celebration” on Friday, May 13, will celebrate the members of the Class of 2016 and their families. Festivities are from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Student Center. Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell and other university officials and faculty will welcome graduates and their families. The festivities will include live band karaoke, bowling, billiards, graduation craft projects to document memories, and the movie, “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.”

ISAT hosted more than 100 attendees at SIU Cyber Security Day 2016. Tom Harness, a local business owner, discussed social media security, and Curt Wilson, a security researcher who discussed the cyber threat landscape.

2016 HONORS DAY
This year’s Honors Day ceremonies were held on Saturday, April 9, 2016. The University event started at 2:00pm in the SIU Student Center Ballrooms with remarks by Chancellor Colwell and Dr. Christina Linda Lyons, which was followed by the College ceremony at 3:30pm in the TEC. More than 100 students were recognized by Chairs, Directors, faculty, staff, families and friends.

Mr. Robert Broomfield, Academic Advisor for Radiologic Sciences, Dental Hygiene, and Mortuary Science and Funeral Service, is the recipient of the 2016 University-Level Administrative Professional Excellence Award. Congratulations to Robert on this achievement as this award can only be received once during a person’s career at SIUC!

Twenty-eight CASA students completed the SIU Externship program over Spring Break (March 14 – 18, 2016) and will be recognized for their achievements on Tuesday, March 29th (5:00 – 7:30pm) in the SIU Student Center. CASA will host a special ceremony from 5:00 – 6:00pm in the Mississippi Room for our Externs, interested faculty, and local sponsors who supported these efforts.

Build Your Own Android App Day Camp for Middle School Girls
The “Build Your Own Android App Day Camp” took place at Morris Library on Saturday, February 20, 2016. The camp was designed to help girls get hands-on experience creating and using mobile applications. All participants received an Android phone and learned Android programming. Around twenty Middle school-age girls learned how to create their own mobile applications for Android phones during a free camp at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Dr. Nancy Martin, IST Associate Professor, and Dr. Andrey Soares, IST Assistant Professor, taught the Android programming.

HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT STUDENTS ATTEND THE MAHCEF CONFERENCE
Approximately 45 HCM students traveled independently to Carle Clinic in Urbana, Illinois for a Population Health conference hosted by the Mid-America Health Care Executives Forum (a chapter of the American Health Care Executives.) Sessions included Patient Centered Medical Homes, CEO Roundtable Discussion, and Population Health Management. They received a round of applause from the CEOs for their excellent attendance and initiative!

Give Kids a Smile Day
Around 160 kids received free dental care Friday, February 19, 2016, during Give Kids a Smile Day. For many years the School of Allied Health's Dental Hygiene program has been participating in this event and Give Adults a Smile Day events partnering with the Southern Illinois Dental Society and the Southern Illinois Dental Hygiene Society. About 90 SIU students took part in Friday's event.

Wolverton: Self-driving cars promise a 'revolution,' but not necessarily a positive one
With self-driving car technology rapidly advancing and such vehicles already driving on city streets, the time is ripe to start talking about how they might change more than just how we get around. "It's not going to be all positive," said Shannon Sanders McDonald, a professor of architecture at Southern Illinois University who has studied the potential impacts of self-driving cars. "If we understand (the drawbacks), we can design for them so their impact is not so negative."

First Robotic Competition
This past Saturday, CASA hosted the Southern Qualifier of the First Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics competition. 23 teams of junior high and high school students from three states, along with their parents, coaches, mentors, and numerous volunteers filled the SIU Transportation Education Center for the daylong event.

Navistar, manufacturer of International trucks, has committed to increasing its partnership and support of the SIU Automotive Technology Department. This fall, Navistar donated equipment valued at over $60,000.

'Everyone's grandma' excited to earn degree - Christi Mathis
Previously, “I could barely turn the computer on,” she said with a chuckle. But, she wondered if computers could hold the key to a new career for her. She is earning her bachelor’s degree in Information Systems Technologies this weekend.
