AROUND THE COLLEGE

Here are some recent events in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts

  • Five seniors in the Information Systems Technologies program that comprise the university’s Student Web Development team finished third in the nation in April in St. Louis. The team competed at the Association for Information Technology Professionals (AITP) National College Conference and Career Fair. This is the third year a student web development team from the university has competed.
  • Paced by seven returning members, the “Security Dawgs” finished second in March in the Midwest Regional College Cyber Defense Competition. The finish is the team’s best in nearly 10 years; the squad advanced to the Midwest regionals after a second-place finish in a wildcard competition earlier in the month.
  • The College will host its fourth annual ASA Multidisciplinary Research Symposium Nov. 4 at the Transportation Education Center. The theme of this year’s symposium is “New Horizons in the Applied Sciences and Arts: Rethinking and Remaking Our World for the 21st Century.” Organizers are seeking proposals for presentations, panels, student posters, and workshops that will provide opportunities for students, researchers and practitioners to discuss the influence and impact of the applied sciences and arts on our future. Additional information, including proposal guidelines, is available at https://research.asa.siu.edu/symposium/index.php.
  • Jacqueline Nash, a sophomore in health care management from Bettendorf, Iowa, received the Mid-America Health Care Executives Forum Award. The School of Allied Health’s Health Care Management program faculty nominated Nash based upon her academic performance, leadership acumen and volunteer service.
  • The inaugural CASA Faculty Research Flash Talk was April 28 at Carbondale Community Arts Center. There were 21 presentations with 24 faculty members involved. The flash talks are a rapid-fire set of five-minute presentation by different faculty members highlighting ongoing research and projects. The event’s inaugural abstract booklet is here.
  • The annual “Give Kids A Smile Day,” offered by the School of Allied Health’s Dental Hygiene program, attracted more than 150 children in March.  The program for children under 16 and who are without access to regular dental treatment celebrated its 15th year. About 90 students and 16 faculty from the dental hygiene program, along with volunteer dentists and hygienists, provided the free care.
  • Samantha Hennig, a senior in dental hygiene, has been selected by the School of Allied Health Dental Hygiene program to receive the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD) national recognition award for senior dental hygiene students who have demonstrated special interests and achievement in community dentistry and dental public health.
  • A two-day course to allow drone operators to gain Federal Aviation Administration certification to operate unmanned aircraft systems continues to be successful. There have been 85 people in the four courses offered at the Transportation Education Center. The next session is set for May 6-7. Employees with utility companies, television stations and agricultural research biologists have attended the class. FAA regulations put in place last year require certification for drone operators if they will operate drones under commercial guidelines for businesses and surveying. Of the 24 FAA-approved drone test centers in Illinois, SIU Carbondale is the only four-year public university that offers the course.
