New SIU-C facility advances automotive career opportunities
When one sees the gleaming new Transportation Education Center at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, which houses the Automotive Technology four-year degree program, with its large classroom spaces, 95 donated vehicles to work on, brand new lifts and equipment and more, a question comes to mind.

Aviation graduates in select company with NTSB
Josh Lindberg and Dennis Diaz dreamed of piloting commercial planes when they first enrolled in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s nationally recognized aviation program. But their education has led to Diaz and Lindberg being in very select company in the aviation industry.

Style in Study - Ben Bayliff
Molly Howard-Crow, a senior from Carbondale studying fashion design, works to attach a waist band to the top of a pencil skirt as part of her final project for class. Howard-Crow said people don’t think of fashion design as a serious major, and they just don’t realize the role that fashion plays in their lives. “Even if we don’t consider ourselves into fashion persé, everyone has their own personal style and would wear one thing but not another,” she said.

Southern Illinois celebrates new transportation education center - Elizabeth Zinchuk
A grand opening was held Friday for the new Transportation Education Center at the Southern Illinois Airport in Murphysboro. The $63 million, 228,000-square-foot complex contains classrooms, faculty offices, teaching labs and meeting rooms and serves three SIU programs . It was commemorated at the event by university and state leaders, students, faculty, staff and program alumni.

Aviation department chosen as FAA affiliate member - Tai Cox
SIU will now have some extra funds for research and growth from the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA selected the university to be among 10 others in the country as an affiliate member of the administration’s Air Transportation Center for Excellence for General Aviation. The Center for Excellence is a partnership between the involved universities, the aviation industry and the federal government, which will focus on research to improve general aviation’s safety and sustainability, said David NewMyer, aviation technology department chair.

Student ideas rewarded at expo
Three SIU students came out of this weekend a little bit richer. The fourth annual Technology and Innovation Expo was held at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Center in Carbondale Friday, where the Saluki Idea Competition concluded. The top five teams or individuals with the best ideas were announced and awarded cash prizes at the expo.

SIU keeps its eyes on the sky - Brent Stewart
A crowd of SIU Carbondale aviation students, faculty and volunteers gathered at Southern Illinois Airport early Saturday morning to welcome a special flight. More than 120 mostly high school, as well as community college students flew from Chicago on an American Airlines MD-80 passenger plane for the 8th American Airlines-SIU Aviation Career Day.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale's storied aviation history is adding a new chapter that puts the emphasis squarely on the future of general aviation safety. The Federal Aviation Administration late last month selected the University to be an affiliate member of the FAA's Air Transportation Center for Excellence for General Aviation.

Architecture faculty, students assist “YouthBuild” - Pete Rosenbery
Faculty and students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Architecture will help youths in Alexander and Pulaski counties gain construction and historic preservation experience. The effort is part of a program that stems from a recent U.S. Department of Labor grant under the agency’s “YouthBuild” program to the Cairo-based Delta Center, Inc., for at-risk youths between 16 and 24 years old. The $728,000 grant for three years will enable students to earn General Educational Development (GED) degrees and improve their skills to potentially earn jobs in the construction field.

The SIU Alumni Association is now accepting applications for Southern Illinois University Carbondale students to participate in its award-winning extern program. The application deadline is Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. Students will participate during the University's spring break March 11-15.

Job fair caters to STEM field students - Matt Daray
SIU students recently had the chance to meet with employers in some of the largest growing fields in today’s job market. The Student Center’s second floor was filled Wednesday morning with company representatives and prospective student employees looking for jobs or internships in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Employment in professional, scientific, and technical services related to STEM fields is projected to grow by about 29 percent, which would add about 2.1 million new jobs between 2010 and 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
