Security Dawgs Take Second Place
The SIU Security Dawgs student cyber security team finished second in the monthly Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance Cyber Wars competition. The team finished behind Northern Kentucky University in the November event. The team has competed since 2006 and taken home first- or second-place trophies every year except once in 2011.

Flying Salukis Take Region VIII Title - Pete Rosenbery
Maintaining tradition is important. The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Flying Salukis continued their dominance last week in winning another National Intercollegiate Flying Association Region VIII championship. After winning the national title in 2011, the Flying Salukis have finished third in the nation each of the past two years.

Aviation recruits take first class flight - Seth Richardson
The SIU School of Aviation partnered with American Airlines to hold one of their annual career days on Saturday. The event involves flying potential recruits in a 160-passenger McDonnell Douglas MD-80 donated by American Airlines from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to the Southern Illinois Airport. 120 students made the trip from Chicago to come to the SIU campus.

Renovated gallery hosts faculty member installation - Seth Richardson
The installation, “Running Rampant,” will be on public display in Quigley Hall Room 119 today until Oct. 5. The show features abstract woodworking pieces from Stewart Wessel, a professor of architecture and interior design, and serves as the first faculty member art installation in the gallery’s history.

Saluki Flugtag team competes in Chicago - Jordan Vandeveer
The Last Action Heroes, SIU’s Flugtag team of Hendrickson as the pilot, with a crew of four—Matt Grimsley, Owen Freeman, Ryan Polk, and Brett Johnson— took the stage Saturday with 30 other Flutag teams. Despite the two-and-half-hour wind delay, The Last Action Heroes were ready to take flight in their handcrafted machine.

Aviation students prepare to plunge - Seth Richardson
The Last Action Heroes, a group of students from the SIU School of Aviation, will compete in the Chicago leg of the 2013 Red Bull Flugtag contest. The competition involves building a homemade flying machine, pushing it off of a 30-foot platform, and gliding it as far as possible into a lake. The teams have to choose a theme and perform a skit to go along with the gliding machine.

Architects Look to Future with Automated Vehicles - Andrea Hahn
Shannon McDonald, an assistant professor of architectural studies, was one of the founding organizers of the Transportation Research Board’s Road Vehicle Automation Conference last year. She was also part of organizing the second conference, held in July, at Stanford University in California.

Blue Angels Visit
U.S. Navy Lt. Ryan Chamberlain, a 2003 graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s aviation management program and an elite Blue Angel pilot, will visit with aviation students Friday, Sept. 13, after he arrives at 9:30 a.m. at Southern Illinois Airport.

SIU Attracts Strong Freshman Class
New recruitment, financial aid and scholarship strategies, along with a growing reputation as a national research university that gives students strong personal attention, are among the factors that helped Southern Illinois University Carbondale attract its largest freshman class in 20 years. Eight colleges and the School of Law recorded increases in new students. The colleges of engineering and applied arts and sciences experience overall enrollment growth.

Enrollment figures indicate large freshman class - Seth Richardson
Despite the drop in overall enrollment, freshman enrollment grew by over 12 percent from 2,286 to 2,571. The freshman class is the largest it has been in 20 years. Cheng attributed this to a complete overhaul of how SIU is being marketed to new students.

USG looks to incoming freshmen for involvement - Seth Richardson
Oliver Keys, a senior from East St. Louis studying automotive technology and the vice president of USG, said he is excited for the fall semester and wants to see things happen. Keys said USG has members on the executive board that are peer mentors and get to know the freshman through that. Keys said USG as a whole will work on ways to get this year’s large freshman class involved.

Alumni Association names scholarship recipients
The SIU Alumni Association at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has announced 10 scholarship recipients for the 2013-14 academic year. The awards come from funds earmarked for the Roscoe Pulliam Scholarship, the SIU Legacy Scholarship, the Rebecca and Jerry Kill Scholarship, and the Connie Armstrong Scholarship.

SIU Carbondale celebrates off-campus graduates - Pete Rosenbery
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is celebrating the achievements of nearly 115 graduates who are earning degrees this week at two of the University’s off-campus military locations. Consistently honored for its commitment for being among the nation’s top military-friendly colleges and universities, the recognition and the season for off-site graduations continues with ceremonies today (June 7) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center/Naval Support Activity in Bethesda, Md. Ceremonies at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, Calif., were June 6.

Helping a hurt friend stay alive on a bike the size of a compact car turned out to be no biggie for Cruit, 29, a Realtor with Bill Mundy’s Real Estate Shoppe firm and something of a wizard with technology. He’s just finished up a degree in electronic system technology at Southern Illinois University and is a technical sergeant in the Illinois Air National Guard.

Inaugural ‘Forever SIU’ celebrates Class of 2013 - Joaquin Norman
A festive event celebrating the accomplishments of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Class of 2013 is set for Friday, May 10. The inaugural “Forever SIU: A Commencement Celebration,” will offer graduating seniors and their families the opportunity to gather for fun and refreshments the evening before commencement. The event is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the SIU Arena parking lot.

Faith Miller wins Sturgis public service award - Christi Mathis
In recognition of her extensive public service, she is the recipient of the 2013 Lindell W. Sturgis Memorial Public Service Award. The annual award, presented by the SIU Board of Trustees since 1980, recognizes SIU Carbondale employees for public service unrelated to their jobs. Named after a Metropolis native who served more than 30 years on the SIU Board, including a term as chairman from 1969 until retiring in 1971, the award carries a $750 cash prize. Sturgis passed away in 1972.

Popular summer architecture camp dates set - Kristen George
Campers come to Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s architecture camps from all over the world to not only learn about buildings and design, but also build friendships. Registration is open for architecture camps for youths in grades 4-12. The 2013 camps feature weeklong sessions of the ever-popular Kid Architecture Camp, Middle School Architecture Camp and High School Architecture Camps. Continuing Education and Outreach along with the School of Architecture is again offering the camps.

Fleege earns Simon Distinguished Faculty Award - Pete Rosenbery
Fleege is the 2013 recipient of the E.J. and Mary C. Simon Distinguished Faculty Award in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts (CASA). E.J. Simon was dean of the college from its inception in 1951 until his retirement in 1970, and both he and his wife, Mary C. Simon, remained strong supporters of the University and CASA.

Gala recognizes women faculty, staff and students - Christi Mathis
Southern Illinois University Carbondale students, faculty, and staff faculty earned scholarships and recognition recently at the 17th annual “Celebrate Women: Honoring Inclusive Excellence Women’s Scholarships Luncheon and Awards Ceremony. The event commemorates March as Women’s History Month and honors women and their achievements. Approximately 200 people gathered for the event, and organizers said this year’s celebration was a major success -- doubling in attendance and scholarship funds raised.

Organization helps women aviators fly higher - Elizabeth Zinchuk
Women in Aviation, the university’s branch of the international organization, is an RSO that promotes the active role of women in aviation at the collegiate level. Despite the organization’s name, members encourage everyone to join — RSO president Angela Stearn, a senior from Glen Ellyn studying aviation technologies, said the RSO has as many males as females. The group’s goal stresses supporting women entering aviation-related fields but supports anybody interested.

Sky is the limit for aviation student - Rita Cheng
Courtney Copping, a senior in aviation management and a flight instructor, received the Top Female Pilot award for 2012 from the National Intercollegiate Flying Association. A member of our Flying Salukis, Courtney earned the award during last year’s national flying championships when our team finished third. Courtney is the fifth female pilot from SIU to earn that award during the last 14 years.

Security Dawgs hack first place - Zach Martin
The university’s Security Dawgs protected their cyber turf during the weekend. The team took home first place and the state championship at the Illinois Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition hosted Saturday at SIU.

SIU cyber defense team wins competition - Nick Mariano
Southern Illinois’ “Security Dawgs” won the competition and will be advancing to the Midwest Regional Competition on March 22 and 23. The team has had success in the competition in the past, having won the nationals a few years before.

'Security Dawgs' prepare for cyber defense event - JOAQUIN NORMAN
Members of the SIU Carbondale “Security Dawgs” will keep watch for cyber attacks and unwanted viruses during the Illinois Cyber Defense Competition on Feb. 23. SIU is again one of three sites in Illinois that will host the statewide competition, which replicates what students will see in the corporate information technology world.

Students learn skills with SWAG - Kayli Plotner
The university’s automotive and aviation departments teamed up with the after-school program Students With A Goal to offer students six weeks of hands-on activities that involve sound and radio waves, rockets and gliders, alternative fuel and autonomous vehicle technology. The program was started last year to help students in grades 6-8 for one hour before school and two hours after through tutoring and enrichment activities.
