SIU Dental Hygiene (DH) program had another successful “Give Kids a Smile Day” event last Friday, March 3, 2017. DH Students, faculty, and local dentists gave free checkups and cleanings to approximately 100 kids during this event. The service is offered once per year for children under age 16 who are without access to regular dental treatment. Some children received some dental treatment beyond the preventive care provided by our students that included x-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments and pit and fissure sealants in addition to a dental exam. Jennifer Meyer, Assistant Instructor of Dental Hygiene, was the event Coordinator.

Many DH faculty participated in this event, including Faith Miller, Jennifer Sherry, Tenley Dailey, Shelly File, Teri McSherry, Stacey McKinney, Dr. Glen Parker, Dr. Sandie Beebe, and retired professor Charla Lautar. Many DH staff members helped with this event as well, including Andi Nix, Natalie Richardson, and Community Dental Clinic staff Amy Stacey and Carolyn Harmon. Dr. Amy Wyatt supervised dentist, faculty, and volunteers. Dr. Kevin Cook, an orthodontist in Carbondale provided lunch for the volunteers. Picture below shows Dr. Amy Wyatt and Dr. Bryan Goldesberry with Dean Wang. Dr. Goldesberry will be hosting a free dental day soon. His practice is University Place Dental in Carbondale.

This is the 15th year SIU DH has hosted the Give Kids a Smile Day program. Congratulations!
